Stories as Psycho-Spiritual Graffiti
Our first identity marker is psycho-spiritual graffiti on the walls of our hearts. A story that says, “I am here.” Stories as Orphic Mysteries — Part 1
Summary:
How religion is little more than a bedtime story.
Stories are vessels of symbols (and symbols are visual language).
A story can mark you and is a more truthful marker than race, religion, or politics. A story marker is a more powerful vehicle for agency than the identities we cling to or flick upon each other.
We’re reaching for the spaciousness that comes with disconnection from a gridlock so we can move freely into the imaginal space, into dream time.
It’s said that if you want to communicate anything effectively, you should be able to explain it to a child. So much about how I write and communicate is rooted in that lesson, given that I taught little humans for years before moving toward cultivating discussions around faith. In these new spaces I move in now where very sober conversations are had about faith and identity, whenever I hear any pairing of children and stories it’s always some boorish comment about how religion is little more than a bedtime story. Maybe it all is a fantastic mythic story. Maybe that was by design.
